National Sports Museum

In compilation since 1993, the National Sports Museum will become the country's first national institution solely honoring American sports legends, teams, sports journalists and contributors. International sports personalities will additionally be honored for their contributions to sport in America. Exhibitions of sports artifacts, memorabilia, important sporting events and memorable moments will enrich and educate the public to help preserve America's rich sporting heritage.

Inclusive to all sports, both amateur and professional, the facility will be unlike any other museum visitors have ever experienced. Elements will be part traditional museum, part theme park experience, part theatre, part film, part interactive "hands on" attraction, sensorialy-inspiring and thoroughly entertaining. Visitors will be transported from one period environment to another, decade by decade, affording an opportunity to experience what was happening throughout the country and the world when America's greatest sporting moments took place, and to better help understand the sociological impact sport has had on the development of the American lifestyle. Numerous permanent exhibitions will present a wide spectrum of topics that encompass significant remembrances of America's favorite pastimes.

 

National Sports Library

When completed, The National Sports Library will house a vast collection of sports reference materials, periodicals and sports literature, additionally serving as a repository for sports films, videotapes, still photography, sports art, audio recordings and radio/television programming. The facility will contain sports books, magazines, manuscripts, clip files, commentaries, essays, and a rare book athenaeum, all electronically catalogued for easy access.

Dependent upon copyright clearances, it is additionally anticipated that, over time, the entire collection will be digitized and computer enhanced, providing a Virtual Library to anyone with internet access.

The library will be open to the media, scholars, students and the general public. Rare book study and specific research requests will be granted on an appointment basis. The foundation will not operate the facility as a lending library.

Divisions within the library include the National Sports Tape and Film Repository, National Sports Photographic Archive, National Sports Art Collection, and a centralized National Sports Information Center that will share reference materials and varied sports information with the sporting public, other sports museums, halls of fame, and news-gathering sources throughout the country.

 

Traveling Exhibitions

In addition to offering a dedicated gallery on-site to present established touring sports-related exhibitions, the National Sports Museum will develop and travel numerous exhibits throughout the country heralding the pageantry, devotion and accomplishments of America's legendary athletes and teams, while recalling the nation's great rivalries, memorable games and unique moments in American sport.

An annual traveling exhibition will laud the lifetime achievements of the current class of the National Sports Tributes honorees, concurrently promoting in advance, the nationally televised program.
