Legacy Gardens

"History does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us."

James Baldwin

Surrounding the campus buildings comprising the National Sports Museum will be the foundation's Legacy Gardens, containing landscaped parkland, shrubbery and trees of all types, meandering brick pathways plus serene rest areas with wooden and iron benches.

Artfully-lit exterior displays featuring full-sized "Athletes in Action" bronze statues of selected non-Tributes honorees, captured in personally recognizable and lifelike scened poses, will posthumously honor legendary athletic greats and mediamen of yesterday. A picturesque duck pond will additionally offer a tranquil setting where visitors can stroll and pause underneath shade trees and nearby footbridges.

A natural ampitheatre in the Gardens will serve as the setting for the National Sports Museum's annual Court of the Legends induction ceremony. The bricks and tiles forming the walkways throughout Legacy Gardens will be donated through a fundraising program by individual patrons and corporate sponsors, engraved with their names and appropriate dedications.
